COMMUNICATION LAB

We all approach communication like we already know what it is.  After all, we’ve been doing it all of our lives!  When people do not respond in the way that we expect, or when they do not finish their part of the project within the set deadline, we get upset.

We tend to see communication as the transfer of information; and assume that once people receive the right information they will perform as expected…or be able to make the right decisions.

This approach to communication limits our behavior to message transmission, report execution and the transmission of commands.

What if people do not optimally operate this way?  What if communication was more than merely the transfer of information and that we could permanently communicate powerfully and effectively?

This class is designed to help you create a break-through in effective communication.  We will approach communication in terms of commitments made in conversations; and management in terms of the creation of, responsibility for and initiation of new commitments within organizations, groups and communities.

By participating in this class you will:

·         View communication as more than just a transfer of information.

·         Uncover misconceptions around communication in our culture.

·         Learn to communicate authentically and clearly.

·         Learn skills to use communication as a vehicle to decision-making, commitment and relationship.

This course meets weekly for 8 weeks.  Please see Course Schedule for dates and times.

RELATIONSHIP 101:  Building Your Own

Healthy Self-Concept

Your relationship with yourself is probably the most important relationship you will ever develop.  Has it ever occurred to you that You are the only person you have to  wake up with every morning?  How do you feel about this person with whom you have life-long intimacy?  As much as you take the time to develop your relationships with family, friends, spouses and partners, do you spend that same amount of time or effort building your relationship with yourself?

How you feel about yourself influences the way you treat yourself and others, the ways you move through the world, what you accomplish and the quality of your experience in life.  There isn’t anything—money, power, prestige, attention of others—that can make up for you not liking yourself.

What if successful relationships with others start with you developing an honest, nurturing relationship with yourself.  You’ve often heard, “How do you expect to love anyone if you can’t love yourself first?”

This course, adapted from Leslie Cameron-Bandler’s (one of the pioneers of Neuro-Linguistic Programming) research, is designed for you to begin or to continue creating a loving relationship with yourself.  During the four weeks you will:

Define yourself on the basis of your own evaluation of your behaviors and intentions in everyday situations.

Evaluate and change behaviors (placing behaviors in appropriate contexts) in a way that leads to both liking yourself, and to maintaining feelings of personal worth.

Have the experience of personal worth in all situations regardless of the degree of expertise you may have, or regardless of who else is present.

Establish and maintain criteria and behaviors that naturally lead to treating yourself well, and that lead others to treat you well.

COMMUNICATION, RELATIONSHIP AND PRODUCTIVITY

We are living in a time filled with life-changing challenges, and global size concerns that impact our own freedom and the quality of life we long to live.  We’re being asked to perform and change in ways that are outside of what we currently know. Such transformation calls for awake, aware, creative people--people who are flexible in the face of change, who bring their spirit and imagination to bear on the problems and issues at hand.

Whether at home raising a family or in the workplace making a living, we are being asked to live and produce results as leaders from the level of vision, meaning and purpose-we don’t have the time in our busy schedules each day to take on something that doesn’t mean anything to us, to our families, to our lives in the community. Clearly, we need different skills than the ones we inherited, or received in school.

This course leads you deeply in to the heart of the matter of these issues, challenges and concerns.  We will look at the core competencies of success, fulfillment and accomplishment in the world.  For example: can you speak to anyone about anything?  Can you hear anything from anybody about anything?  Your answer to these questions may lead you to see where your own success or fulfillment is getting stopped.  In this course, you will:

Learn distinctions of communication as commitments in action, as accomplishment.

Develop fundamentals of creating relationship in all situations as a competency of accomplishment.

Develop new ways to handle difficult conversations.

Produce extraordinary results using your new distinctions of communication and relationship.

Improve communication and relationship-building competencies.

This course meets for 2 ½ days on 4 weekends.  Please see Course Schedule for dates and times
